As “Freedom Day†draws closer, we can begin to look forward to filling our calendars with social and cultural events once again.
One event, in particular, which is expected to be on all Sydneysiders radars is the upcoming Matisse exhibition which is due to open at the Art Gallery of New South Wales on November 20, 2021.
As part of the Sydney International Art Series 2021–22, the major exhibition Matisse: Life & Spirit, Masterpieces of the Center Pompidou, Paris showcases the extraordinary range and depth of the art of Henri Matisse, one of the world’s most beloved, innovative and influential artists.
The largest exhibition of the artist’s masterpieces ever in Sydney, Matisse: Life & Spirit was developed by the Art Gallery of NSW in collaboration with France’s premier museum of modern art, the Center Pompidou, National Museum of Modern Art, which holds a world-renowned collection of Matisse’s work. This comprehensive exhibition will also include significant loans from international institutions and private collections, including the Lewis Collection, the Matisse Museum in Cateau-Cambrésis and the Museum in Grenoble, France.
Visitors to this must-see exhibition will be able to feast on more than 100 brilliantly colored and inventive works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and a captivating display of the artist’s late triumphant ‘cutouts’, many of which have been featured in the exhibition. never seen in Australia.
The exhibition reveals how Matisse, one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, has constantly renewed and revitalized his art over six decades.
Highlights of Matisse: Life & Spirit, Masterpieces of the Center Pompidou, Paris include particularly important early work Luxury I 1907; the mid-career masterpiece Decorative figure on an ornamental background 1925; the majestic and monumental self-portrait, The pain of the king 1952, one of the largest cuts the artist made at the end of his career; and one of Matisse’s most famous works from his series of cutouts depicting the female form, Blue Nude II 1952.

The exhibition follows the popular solo exhibitions of the Art Gallery of the Great French Modernists,Picasso: Masterpieces from the National Picasso Museum, Paris in 2011, andMonet and the impressionists in 2009.
Born in 1869 in northern France, Henri Matisse was a tirelessly inventive designer, printmaker, printmaker, painter and sculptor, pioneer of Fauvism and creator of some of the defining works of artistic modernism. Devoted throughout his life to his artistic research, Matisse also experienced personal and political challenges, including two world wars and a battle against cancer. He made one of his most important works towards the end of his life, the famous paper cutouts. Matisse died on November 3, 1954, at the age of 84.
Matisse: Life & Spirit, Masterpieces from the Center Pompidou, Parisis scheduled to open at the Art Gallery of NSW on November 20, 2021 and will be on display until March 13, 2022.
