Langley Gallery to Show Fraser Valley Student Artwork – Aldergrove Star
Works of art representing a range of mediums, styles and subjects are exhibited at the Fort Gallery.
The local gallery brings a broad view of art – featuring photographers, painters, cartoonists and sculptures at the group exhibition After Apple-Picking.
The title of the exhibition refers to a poem by Robert Frost, After apple picking. Frost’s poem revolves around a laborer picking apples before winter, explained gallery coordinator Margaret Campbell.
By showcasing the work of eight post-secondary fine arts students from three schools in the Fraser Valley, event organizers want to recognize and raise awareness of the hard work and commitment that goes into making a work of art. . Campbell added that the exhibit presents a “different narrative” of being an artist.
“We really wanted to hire student artists and see what they were doing. These three great post-secondary institutions in the Fraser Valley are home to great talent,” said Alysha Creighton, Exhibitions Chair.
Creighton said it received many submissions, and the art gallery‘s exhibitions committee selected the top eight. More than 16 works of art in the form of photography, video, painting, sculpture and installation will be showcased at this year’s event.
She invited everyone in the community and assured them that there would be “lots of variety” in the artwork. She further added that the event would stimulate up-and-coming artists from the Fraser Valley.
“A lot of the work was done during the pandemic,” Creighton said. “There is definitely an element of isolation in some work.”
The exhibition will last until March 12.
Selected artists include:
- Calvin Bergen
- Amy Bowler
- Kristal Charlston
- Hyeon Jeong Choi
- Emilie Goodbrand
- Susan E. Johnston
- Luke Pardy and Cobi Timmermans
“I just hope people come out and support young artists,” Creighton said.
