LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 30, 2016) – The Cultural Arts Committee of the Student Activities Council presents the fourth annual exhibition of young artists at a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, in the Peace Gallery located in the Funkhouser building, to encourage students from the University of Kentucky to present their work in a professional gallery.
Portfolios and applications were available on the SAB website and were due by March 11. The students whose works will be presented at the reception of the gallery were chosen two weeks before the event.
“Cultural Arts will be holding its fourth annual Young Artist Competition this spring to continue the tradition of supporting student artists on the UK campus,” said Taylor Hamilton, cultural arts director at SAB. âThe arts have historically been one of the most difficult disciplines to fund. By using local talent, we hope to foster an environment where all student artists, regardless of their skill level, have the opportunity to present their work to their peers. The competition and the ensuing exhibition provide such an opportunity. This event is also our committees’ method of giving back to the community that has tirelessly supported our events each semester.
At the reception there will be a two-speed voting system. Three winners will be chosen, one by the judges and two by the event participants via an SMS poll. The jury is made up of local artists and gallery owners. Each of the winners will be announced at the end of the reception and will receive a $ 750 scholarship from Kennedy’s Art Store.
