NEW MILFORD – Seasons by Thomas Adkins, an exhibition of recent works by the Southbury landscape painter, will run through January 31, 2022 at the Gregory James Gallery, 93 Park Lane Rd. Mr. Adkins, considered one of the best Northeastern Landscapers, features outdoor paintings of rural scenes from Northwestern Connecticut that capture his imagination, as well as works from trips to Vermont and to Monhegan Island and Maine’s mid-coast.
The exhibition finds him at another high point as a painter.
In October, his painting “Cattails On Bashakill†won first place at the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival out of nearly 200 submitted works.
He also won two awards at the festival in 2020 as part of a long list of accolades.
Lyrical, evocative and softly rhapsodic, Mr. Adkins’ paintings capture evanescent moments in time when atmospheric conditions and lighting bring a bit of magic to the landscape.
“The moods, the mystery and the atmosphere, as well as the inherent conception of nature intrigue me, and I seek to unveil and express these qualities in my paintings, trying to document a specific place and time”, said the artist. “Every good landscape painting should have some idea of ​​how the artist feels about a particular place. Every day and every hour there is a different reaction of nature to our senses. “
As an plein air painter, Mr. Adkins begins his paintings on location, typically with sketches and small studies that turn into larger final compositions in the studio.
His works have been exhibited across the United States and are part of prestigious collections, including those of the New Britain Museum of American Art and the Mattatuck Museum of Art, as well as numerous private and corporate collections, including those of Aetna. Insurance, Timex, Webster Bank. , and the private collection of Hilton hotels.
Mr. Adkins is a member of the Oil Painters of America and the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society. He is an iconic member of the Lyme Art Association and a board member of the Hudson Valley Art Association.
A graduate of Paier College of Art in New Haven, who also completed graduate studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York, Mr. Adkins has worked as an art director and creative director for some of Connecticut’s most prestigious advertising agencies and from New York.
His designs and illustrations have been used by Black & Decker, Kraft Foods, GE, IBM, Minolta, Nestlé Waters North America, Wendy’s and other large companies.
